Length-weight relationship and relative condition factor (Kn) of Monopterus cuchia (Hamilton)

Abstract

Length-weight relationship and relative condition factor (Kn) of freshwater mud
eel, Monopterus cuchia (Hamilton) from Mymensingh, Bangladesh were studied
from 261 specimens ranging from 19.0-89.5 cm in total length, for six months
from March-August 2000. The equations for the length-weight relationships
were
Log W= -3.13+3.13 x Log L (for males)
Log W= -3.41+3.30 x Log L (for females)
Log W= -3.12+3.13 x Log L (for sexes combined).
The relationships were significant at 0.1% level in all cases and cube law was
followed at 95% confidence limit indicating isometric growth pattern. Relative
condition factor (Kn) values ranged from 0.76-1.16 (SD ± 0.13 mean Kn 1.03) for
males, 0.82-1.23 (SD ± 0.15 mean Kn 1.06) for females and 0.88-1.18 (SD ± 0.11
mean Kn 1.04) for sexes combined. Maximum relative values were observed in
smaller sized fishes. Relative condition factor was found to be high during the
monsoon months (spawning period) from April -June reflecting the maturity of
the fish. First maturity was found to attain at 25.2 cm in total length. The
length-weight relationship and condition factor showed that the growth of M.
cuchia from Mymensingh, Bangladesh is quite satisfactory.
