201 / 231
Abstract
Therapon jarbua - the tiger perch is a commercially important fish, occuringabundantly in the coastal waters of east coast of India. Comparative studies on
the distribution, food and feeding habits of this fish from the polluted coastal
waters close to Visakha harbour and the relatively unpolluted Anthervedi estuarine
waters near Narsapur, situated at a distance of 250km from Visakha,
have been conducted. Marked differences in the food habits of the fish in the
two habitats have been evidenced. Fish larvae and squilla formed the main food
items at Visakha, while prawns and crabs dominated the gut contents of the
fish from Anthervedi
