Comparative evaluation of biochemical parameters in wild and cultured brood stock of Macrobrachium rosenbergii
145 / 142
Abstract
The present investigation was carried out to study the variations if any, in thebiochemical composition of wild-caught and pond reared broodstock of
Macrobrachium rosenbergii. Important biochemical constituents (protein, carbohydrate,
lipid and cholesterol) were analysed in tissues like muscle, hepatopancreas,
ovary and freshly spawned eggs of both wild and cultured female
broodstock of M.rosenbergii using standard procedures. The results showed that
the total lipid contents in hepatopancreas and ovary were significantly lower in
pond reared stock (6.74 ± 0.37 and 1.28 ±0.17% respectively) than in wild stock
(11.04 + 0.42 and 2.36 + 0.49 % respectively). Similarly, the cholesterol content in
hepatopancreas and eggs were significantly lower in pond reared stock (0.25 ±
0.07 and 0.65 + 0.15 % respectively) than in wild stock (0.97 + 0.07 and 0.59 ±
0.09 respectively). The protein and carbohydrate content in various tissues did
not show any significant changes between the wild and cultured stock. The observed
changes in lipid and cholesterol contents in tissues between the two stocks
showed that additional nutrients required during maturation of gonads may not
be met by the grow- out diet provided to the cultured stock. The study, thus
indicated the need for a carefully formulated broodstock diet to improve the
quality of the hatchery produced seeds as majority of hatcheries collect brooders
from grow- out ponds.
