A comparison of Pampus argenteus stock parameters in east and west Asia
223 / 253
Abstract
Silver pomfret (Pampus argenteus) is one of the most valuable fish in the PersianGulf area. It supports a good fishery both in the Persian Gulf and the eastern
region. Length frequency data from commercial catch have been used in most
cases to study the population of P. argenteus. Although the results of the studies
carried out so far indicate some differences in the estimates of population
parameters of P. argenteus, it seems that the same stock is exploited by Iran,
Kuwait and Iraq. In this article, the estimates of growth parameters, mortality
rates and the management policies for P. argenteus stocks have been compared
and analysed in different countries, especially in the Persian Gulf area (Iran,
Kuwait and Iraq waters). Results indicate that there have been a great deal of
variation in the estimates of population parameters and this could perhaps be
attributed to the nature of data used and the methods of assessment.
