240 / 360
Abstract
The trends and sustainability of fish catches from riverine stretches in variousdistricts of Himachal Pradesh were appraised. The perennial rivers Chenab, Ravi,
Beas and Sutlej in the west and Yamuna and its tributaries in the east form the
riverine network of the state. Magnitude of rivers in most of the districts varied
according to their geographical features and area. The riverine catch for the state
had a significant growth rate (9.56%). It was more than growth rate in the number
of fishermen fishing in rivers, indicating increase in fish productivity per fisherman
over the study period. The models tried to estimate maximum sustainable harvest
revealed positively sloped equations for most of the districts, indicating enormous
scope for expansion of fishery activities. Although the State Fisheries Department
has initiated several schemes to enhance fishery operations, these steps need
further intensification to achieve the desired outcome
