Abstract

In a study of different species of elasmobranchs of the Super Order Batoidea from
northern Hormoz Strait, during August 1993 - January 1994, 366 specimens
belonging to 8 families, 11 genera and 16 species were collected. For the first
time, Aetobatus flagellum (Bloch and Schneider, 1801) and Rhinoptera javanica
(Muller and Henle, 1841) are described from the Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman,
and Rhinobatus schlegelii (Muller and Henle, 1841) from the Iranian waters.
Another species of the Gymnura which appears to be new, was also collected.
Among the collected families, Dasyatidae and Gymnuridae, are found to be more
abundant in this region. Among the species collected three, namely Dasyatis
bennetti (Muller and Henle, 1841), Himantura walga (Muller and Henle, 1841) and
Gymnura poecilura (Shaw, 1804) are more abundant.
