Prevalence of limb loss in Macrobrachium nobilii (Decapoda : Caridea)
125 / 104
Abstract
A Macrobrachium nobilii population was examined at four chosen sites alongthe course of River Cauvery to assess the frequency of limb loss. Of the 1,237
prawns examined 203 were found to have lost a total of 709 pereiopods from
1-5 in varying percentages. Monthly variations in limb loss (%) ranged from
9.8 to 26.6. Analysis of site-wise and month-wise pooled data indicates a
significant difference (P<0.01) in sites 2 and 4 and also during November -
December. Among the five pairs of pereiopods the most vulnerable to injury
were the 2nd and the 3rd, and the least susceptible were the 5th and the 1st
(P<0.01). Berried prawns suffered greater (P<0.01) frequency of limb loss (3.6
pereiopods/prawn) than non-berried ones (2.87).
