Productivity and fish yield in the beels of lower Brahmaputra basin

Abstract
Productivity and fish jaeld from the floodplain wetland of lower Brahmaputrabasin — Dighali, Dora and Ghorajan beels were evaluated as a function of
limnochemical parameters. The soil was acidic in all the three beels studied.
High values of organic carbon, available nitrogen and phosphorus were
observed. The rich nutrient status of the soil was not reflected in the water
phase. Alkalinity, TDS, hardness were low in beels. Due to the accumulation
of nutrients by macrophytes the ph5^oplankton population was low in the
beels. The results of various parameters analysed for the three beels in the
order of Dighali, Dora and Ghorajan are as follows: The beels receive 1855
k cal ha' 3rr' of incidence solar energy out of which energy fixed by macrophytes
on an average was 112.1 x 10", 81.9 10'' and 93.0 x 10''g C ha'yr^ while energy
fixed by phytoplankton was 19.9 x 10", 13.5 x 10" and 16.3 x 10" g C ha'
yr' in Dighali, Dora and Ghorajan respectively. The average annual fish
production in the three beels was 14.4, 144.5 and 13.50 kg h a ' respectively.
Conversion efficiency of potential to fish was quite high (1.62, 22.98 and
1.98 %), from ph3^oplankton to fish it was insignificant (0.007, 0.11 and
0.009 %) and that from producer to fish varied from 0.001 to 0.02 %.
