On the ornamental fish fauna in the Brahmaputra drainage system
178 / 644
Abstract
A collection of species of ornamental fishes was made from the Brahmaputravalley in upper Assam. The cyprinids dominated the list followed by loaches.
Most of the ornamental fishes were collected from beels and streams. The weed
infested beels are excellent habitats for varieties of ornamental fishes. The
study also revealed that large scale exploitation of certain hill stream species
caused drastic depletion of their stock. Application of pesticides in the tea
gardens and frequent use of explosives in the hilly areas also adversely affect
the habitats of ornamental fishes.
