Macrozoobenthos in the high altitude lentic environment of Deoria Tal of Garhwal Himalaya
152 / 198
Abstract
The present contribution embodies results of a study on the macrozoobenthosfrom the high altitude lentic environment of Deoria Tal of Garhwal Himalaya.
Macrozoobenthos of the lake were contributed by the larvae, nymphs and
adults of the Diptera, Ephemeroptera, Hemiptera, Coleoptera and Plecoptera.
Representatives of Oligochaeta, Hirudinea and Mollusca were also present.
Population density of macrozoobenthos fluctuated from 151 to 290 individuals
m2, being maximum in December and minimum in February. It was inferred
on the basis of present observations that the abundance of lacustrine
macrozoobenthos was regulated by the seasonal appearance and disappearance
of aquatic macrophytes acting as cover for shelter, nature of substratum and
light penetration
