Effects of some non-conventional animal proteins on growth and certain tissue biochemical response in Clarias batrachus fingerlings

Abstract
Three diets were formulated using meat-cum-bone meal, ghee residue ( a dairy by-product) and fish mea] as the animal protein sources. These were tested for their efficacies in the rearing of the catfish Clarias batrachus fingerlings on a pilot scale feeding trial of 30 days duration. Growth and some associated nutritional indices, tissue level of nucleic acids, fatty acid profile and proximate composition were determined. The results of the study indicated that meat cum bone meal, a leather industry by-product can be an alternative to fish meal in the preparation of catfish diet. However, relatively poor growth performance of the fish recorded with ghee residue based diet rendered it unsuitable as a feed component for the species due to low acceptabilityDownloads
