Composition, distribution and seasonality of benthic invertebrates in two important Kumaon Himalayan lakes

Abstract
Investigations on the composition, distribution and seasonality of benethicinvertebrates in two important Kumaon lakes the Khurpatal and the
Naukuchiatal were undertaken in detail during a period of about four years.
The bottom fauna mainly comprised of Oligochaeta, Diptera, Insecta and
Mollusca. Tie quantitative dominance in both the lakes exhibited winter
maxima and monsoon minima. The faunal assemblages were noticed more
diversified in Naukuchiatal lake compared to the Khurpatal. Incidence of
benthic population migration into profound zones of the lakes due to thermal
variations has also been observed. Based on the benthic studies, it may be
stated that Naukuchiatal lake is at a better position of trophic level than
Khurpatal.
