Influenceof Sclerotinia sclerotiorum on growth, oil contents and biochemical changes in Mentha arvensis

Abstract
The effect of S. sclerotiorum on the disease development, growth, oil yield and biochemical changes in Mentha arvensis (cv. Gomti), herb with rich source of menthol, was determined. A corresponding decrease in plant fresh and dry weights of plants was observed with the increase in initial inoculum levels of S. sclerotiorum. The maximum reduction was observed at inoculum level of 2.4 g mycelium/kg soil. The S. sclerotiorum infection in roots and suckers was increased (18-80%) with increasing the inoculum dose (0.2 to 2.4 g/kg soil). Significant (P < 0.01) reduction in oil yield, total chlorophyll, total phenol and total sugar of M. arvensis was observed in infected plants irrespective of inoculum level as compared to uninoculated control.
