Effect of antagonistic bacteria and plant defence activators on management of bacterial leaf spot of mungbean

Three out of fifty two mungbean phylloplane bacteria (Plbs) and one, out of twenty one, mungbean rhizobacteria (MRb) were selected for intensive studies on the basis of their in vitro antagonistic activity towards Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. vignaeradiatae (Xav), the inducer of bacterial leaf spot of mungbean. The MRb and Plbs isolates were identified as Pseudomonas fluorescens (MRb-1) and Bacillus sp. (Plb-1, Plb2 and Plb-3). Isolates of MRb-1 and Plb-3 were most effective in inhibiting the growth of Xav. Salicylic acid (SA), ferric chloride (FeCl3 ) and di-potassium hydrogen phosphate (K2 HPO4 ) were used as plant defense activators. The MRb-1 was found better in increasing germination percentage (by 6.82 %), dry weight (by 32 %), leaf area (by 20.5%) and chlorophyll content (by 8.6%) over the water treated control. Biocontrol agents (MRb-1 and Plb-3) were found better than abiotic elicitors in reduction of seedling and trifoliate leaf infection induced by Xav.
