Rice tungro virus isolates from five locations in India were first assayed on the susceptible cultivar TN-1 and then on to five cultivars of rice for differential reactions. On TN-1, two groups of symptomatic variants, severe and mild, were identified. Furthermore, based on the reaction of differential cultivars, the identification of four distinct strains based on symptoms and transmission pattern was possible. Two of the above four strains could be identified as Rice tungro bacilliform virus from leaf extracts by PCR-RFLP.
