Mulching with transparent polyethylene and root dip in fungicides for the management of collar and root rot of strawberry

Soil solarization with transparent polyethylene mulch (25 µm) for 40 days (June 1 to July 10) during 2000 and 2001 was found effective for the control of collar and root rot of strawberry caused by Sclerotium rolfsii. Mulching of the irrigated plots with the polyethylene sheet resulted in 10.2o C (2000) and 10.6o C (2001) higher temperature at 7 cm soil depth with an average maximum temperature of 38.4 and 39.6°C, respectively. Soil solarization for 40 days completely inhibited the germination of sclerotia of the fungus buried at 7 cm soil depth. Three set of treatments i.e.drenching, root dip + drenching with different fungicides and root dip of strawberry runners in different fungicides followed by their plantation in solarized plots, were tested for the management of the disease. Among three set of treatments, root dip of strawberry runners in different fungicides followed by their plantation in solarized plots was found most effective. Among different treatments of this set, root dip of strawberry runners in SAAF or Companion (both contain carbendazim 12 % + mancozeb 63%) followed by their plantation in solarized plots was found most effective in comparison to 38.1% incidence of the disease in unsolarized plots also resulted 244.1 – 266.7% increase in fruit yield.
