Protein profiling has been used by several workers to differentiate many species of Phytoph th ora. Polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE) of mycelial proteins of Phytopftthora species has been carried out after extraction from 7 days old culture filtrate of fungus. Isolates of Phytophthora from leaf spot of C. tabu/aris produces identical protein patterns with that of P. nicotianae Van Breda de Haan. On the basis of sporangium caducity (noncaducous), and other sporangial measurements the fungus was identified as P. nicotianae Van Breda de Haan and the same was confirmed by CMI, England (lMI No. 343030). Gel electrophoresis can be used as an adjunct to the taxonomic characters in identification of Phytophthora species wherever doubt exists.
