Abstract

Varietal screening was conducted to identify tungro (rice tungro bacilliform virus, RTBV) resistant sources in rice hybrids and popular basmati varieties in India. Of ten rice hybrids tested (2 basmati and 8 non-basmati), all except MPH501 (non-basmati), were susceptible to tungro. Masking of symptoms was evident in all the tested rice hybrids, 3 weeks after inoculation. Back inoculation test revealed the presence of tungro viruses from all the symptomless plants of rice hybrids. Among the three basmati varieties tested, Basmati 370 was resistant. Nucleic acid spot hybridization tests using a radiolabelled pRTBV-E2 probe precisely detected RTBV infection in all the asymptomatic leaves of rice hybrids as well as infected basmati varieties.
