Mode of perpetuation and spread of Alternaria blight of broad bean

Alternaria alternata causing blight of broad bean (Vicia faba) remained viable in diseased plant debris through infected leaves and stems up to 11 and 13 months in the laboratory and up to 10 and 12 months in soil, respectively. It remained viable in infected seeds up to 15 months in the laboratory and up to 13 months in soil. Diseased plant debris, infested soil and infected seeds served as the primary pathogen inoculum source. Secondary spread of the disease occurred through airborne conidia.
