Abstract

False smut (Claviceps oryzae-sativae) has significantly reduced the percent seed germination in all rice varieties tested and was maximum in Champakali (25.3%) and minimum in Rasi (12.9%) in India. Seedlings emerged from seeds of infected panicles had poor seedling vigour and reduced root length was more pronounced than reduced shoot length. The disease has significantly increased chaffiness (up to 40.9%) and decreased 1000 grain weight (up to 32.4%) and panicle weight (up to 25.5%) in Rasi. A 9-41% and 9-44% reduction in phenol and ortho-dihydroxy phenol content, respectively, was observed in seedlings emerged from infected panicles of various genotypes.
