Abstract

Ochratoxin A was detected for the first time as a natural contaminant in dry fruit slices of quinces (Cydonia oblonga) collected from different markets of Jammu and Kashmir state, India. Investigations revealed that 32% of the examined samples werepositive for this toxin and the level of contamination recorded were up to 1.63 mg/kg. Isolation of A. ochraceus from the surface of the dry fruit was infrequent, but the isolates could produce up to 3.4 mg/litre of ochratoxin A on a semisynthetic medium.
