Abstract

The origin of root wilt disease of coconut, its current distribution and the production losses it causes in India are discussed. Symptoms and progress of the disease are described. Evidence regarding the aetiology of the disease is evaluated, including that implicating fungi, bacteria, nematodes, viruses, phytoplasmas, soils and nutrition. Physiological changes induced in the plant by the disease are outlined. Methods of diagnosis are discussed. The contributions of varietal resistance and other management practices to coconut root wilt management are evaluated. Leaf rot disease of coconut is also discussed. Disease symptoms are described, together with aetiology, epidemiology and management (including the relative efficacies of different chemical treatments).
