The virulence of 11 isolates of C. truncatum was studied on a set of 12 arbitrarily selected urdbean (Vigna mungo) differentials. On the basis of the reaction of the test isolates on the differentials, these were grouped into six pathotypes. The reaction type of different isolates was also studied on related legumes (Adjuki bean (Vigna angularis), mung bean (Vigna radiata), lentil (Lens culinaris), faba bean (Vicia faba), arhar [pigeon peas] (Cajanus cajan), soyabean (Glycine max), cowpea (Vigna unguiculata), french bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) and horsegram (Macrotyloma uniflorum)); C. truncatum had a wide host range among the local edible legumes infecting all the species tested. However, the Parbhat cultivar of arhar (Cajanus cajan) was immune since none of the eleven isolates showed a compatible reaction with this cultivar.
