Abstract

Samples of oil seeds, oil cakes and oils of groundnut, cotton, sesame and Ricinus communis collected in Gujarat, India, were analysed for the incidence of aflatoxigenic fungi and aflatoxin contamination. The incidence of Aspergillus flavus was highest in groundnut seeds followed by R. communis, sesame and cotton. The isolates from groundnut seeds were most potent aflatoxin producers followed by those from sesame, cotton and R. communis. Aflatoxin contamination was also highest in groundnut seeds followed by cotton, sesame and R. communis. Amongst oil cakes, A. flavus was more prevalent on cotton followed by groundnut, R. communis, and sesame. However, sesame isolates were most toxinogenic followed by those isolated from groundnut, R. communis andsesame. Aflatoxin content was higher in groundnut cakes than in R. communis, cotton or sesame. Analysis of oil samples revealed that aflatoxin contamination was highest in groundnut followed by sesame, cotton and R. communis.
