Abstract

The effects of sulfur dioxide on growth and sporulation of A. alternata and A. brassicicola at different concentrations and for different durations was tested in vitro. Sulfur dioxide at 100 (except 3 h for A. alternata) and 200μg/m3 suppressed theradial growth of A. alternata and A. brassicicola, the growth being lowest at 200μg/m3 for 12 h. The sporulation of A. brassicicola was significantly enhanced at 100μg SO2 m-3 but inhibited at 200μg m-3 (6-12 h). Sporulation of A. alternata was significantly greater at 100μg SO2/m3 (3-6 h) than for other treatments. SO2 at 100μg/m3 significantly stimulated spore germination of A. alternata (3-9 h) and A. brassicicola (3-6 h). Length of spores and number of cells/spore increased as a result of exposure to 100μg SO2/m3 but remained uninfluenced at 200μg. Septation (transverse and longitudinal) of spores of the Alternaria species also showed a varied response.
