Abstract

The ability of 5 medicinal plant extracts, from Basella alba, Glycyrrhiza glabra, Phyllanthus fraternus, Plumbago rosea [P. indica] and Thespesia populnea, to control pumpkin mosaic virus [squash mosaic comovirus] was determined. The 5 extracts showed a higher virus-inhibitory activity when applied before virus inoculation than when applied after. Pre-inoculation application of the plant extracts at different time intervals revealed that the inhibitory effect of B. alba and G. glabra gradually decreased, whereas that of P. fraternus and T. populnea reached a max. after a time lag.
