The response of chickpea varieties BG 256 and JG 62 to infection by Sclerotium rolfsii [Corticium rolfsii] while interacting with Glomus fasciculatum and difolatan and metalaxyl was investigated. In both varieties the pathogen reduced yield and growth of plants. In BG 256 G. fasciculatum enhanced the activity of C. rolfsii by further reducing growth. However, in JG 62 the VAM fungus not only nullified adverse effects of the pathogen but also improved plant growth compared with the control. The pathogen suppressed mycorrhizal formation in both varieties, more significantly in BG 256. Even the addition of fungicides did not alter this response. In the absence of C. rolfsii, metalaxyl improved mycorrhizal formation in both varieties, but difolatan suppressed it in JG 62. It is concluded that there was positive biocontrol of C. rolfsii by G. fasciculatum in JG 62 but in BG 256 the mycorrhiza enhanced activity of C. rolfsii.
