Abstract
At the outset, I thank the Executive Council of the Indian Phytopathological Society for the honour conferred on me by inviting me to deliver the Prof. M.S. Pavgi lecture in this 45th Annual Meeting. It is indeed a privilege to pay my respect to Dr Pavgi in this manner.
Dr M.S. Pavgi is held in very high esteem by his students and friends. He is a distinguished mycologist ang a valued teacher. He always chose to investigate fungi which were difficult to work with. He and his eo-workers investigated the life cycles of species belonging to the genera Olpidiuin (Braun) Rabenhorst, Synchytrium de Bary and Woronin, Protomyees Unger, Protomycopsis Magnus, Entyloma de Bary, Taphrina Fries, Taphridium Juel and Lagerheim and Ravenelia Berkeley. He was not satisfied with only reporting new fungi; he investigated them' in detail. As a student, I had a long association' With him. Dr Pavgi should be assured that his students and friends greatly cherish 'their association with him.
