Abstract
At the outset, I would like to profusely thank the Executive Council of the Indian Phytopathological Society for inviting me to deliver the 2nd Prof. M.S. Pavgi lecture. I am extremely grateful to the Society for this honour. I am sure, most of you know Professor M.S. Pavgi and his scintillating contributions in the field of plant pathology in general and mycology in particular. He is a scientist par excellence.
