Abstract

Demarcation zones were produced when genetically different isolates of Diatrype carissae were paired against one another. The zones varied morphologically with respect to the shape of the regions of white aerial mycelium. When single ascospore isolates from the same stromata were paired, evidence was obtained for a polygenic multiallelic recognition system. The white aerial mycelium usually formed a narrow line or a broad band. When the one isolate gained territorial dominance over another, 'pincer' like interaction zones were obtained. Evidences suggest that the white aerial mycelium contains temporarily a heterokaryotic mycelium.
