The results of field experiments, during 1989 and 1990, revealed that application of fungicides, viz., mancozeb (75 WP) at 0.25 per cent, carbendazim (50 WP) at 0.1 per cent and captafol (80 WP) at 0.25 per cent significantly reduced the severity of leaf spots and pod blights in urdbean (Vigna mungo, cv. PDU 1) caused predominantly by Cercospora cruenta and Cercospora canescens and in association with Ascochyta phaseo(orum and Colletotrichum dematium (f. sp. truncatum). The diseases resulted in the yield losses upto SO.1 per cent under natural epiphytotic conditions. The disease complex resulted in severe defoliation without fungicidal protection and significantly reduced biological yield. Significantly higher grain yield was obtained by spraying mancozeb (8.31 q/ha) followed by carbendazim (7.85 q/ha) and captafol (7.56 q/ha) in comparison to control (5.54 q/ha). Three sprays with fungicides, either alone or in sequence one after the other at 45, 60 and 75 days after sowing were as effective as two sprays at 45 and 60 days and the effects of each spray were additive. The economic analysis indicated that net gain per rupee invested over control was highest by spraying mancozeb followed by carbendazim.
