Abstract

The relative resistance of 24 Indian wheat cultivars to powdery mildew was evaluated, both in field and greenhouse, at seedling and adult plant stages respectively. Cultivars HB 208, CPAN 1676, HD 2329 and, to some extent VL 401 and HD 2024, were found to possess high degree of resistance to powdery mildew. The complete resistance shown by CPAN 1922 under field conditions may be due to the presence of Pm9 which is still very effective and there is no matching virulence for it in Inida. The reaction of 10 wheat varieties tested in seedling and adult plant stages with different races showed that only CPAN 1922 is resistant to race 9 in the seedling stage. In the adult plant stages, CPAN 1922, CPAN 1676, PBW 34 and HB 208 had greater degree of resistance to race 6 and 13 than in the seedling stage. Eight wheat cultivars were tested for slow mildewing in comparison to Kalyansona and HS 86. HB 208 was found to have the lowest disease severity, sporulation index and colony size followed by CPAN 1922, PBW 34, CPAN 1676, HD 2285 and HD 2204. The ranking of these varieties for races 6 and 13 for these characters also remained constant indicating that the slow mildewing character in these varieties may be race non-specific.
