Evaluation of Alternaria alternata (Fr.) Keissler for biological control of Trianthema portulacastrum L.

Trianthema portulacastrum is an obnoxious annual weed, which causes substantial yield reduction on account of competition in several cultivated crops. A foliar pathogen Alternaria alternata was evaluated as a potential biological control agent for effective management of T. portulacastrum with an aim to find the most virulent strain and to evaluate and standardize its application method. The pathogenicity of A. alternata increased with increasing inoculum density, and spore concentration of 107 & 108 spores ml- 1 caused 100 per cent mortality of 10 to 30 days old T. portulacastrum that were raised from the seeds, and also of the naturally grown plants having length of 2-25 cm and 6-182 number of leaves.
