Abstract

Behaviour of two defense related enzymes viz., polyphenol oxidase (PPO) and phenylalanine ammonia lyase (PAL) was studied in three wheat genotypes: HD 29 and DWL 5023 (resistant) and WL 711 (susceptible) after inoculation with Karnal bunt pathogen (Neovossia indica [Tilletia indica]). The activity of PPO increased much more in resistant genotypes HD 29 and DWL 5023 (4.4 and 4.5 fold, respectively) after two days of inoculation (DAI) than in susceptible genotype WL 711 (1.3 fold only). The extractable level of PAL also increased in the two genotypes but declined in the susceptible one. After 2 DAI, PAL activity was 3.9 and 2.3 fold high in HD 29 and DWL 5023, respectively whereas 1.5 fold less activity was detected in WL 711. Regression analysis ofthe data of both enzymes further confirmed their changing trends with respect to time after inoculation.
