Abstract

Effects of alternative ways of splitting and timing N fertilizer application on leaf and neck blast (Magnaporthe grisea) in rain-fed upland rice in relation to yield were investigated at Palampur during 1996-97. In susceptible cv. Himalaya 741, a higher incidence of leaf blast was recorded when N was applied in three and four equal splits of 90 kg ha-1. However, when N splits were protected with fungicide, disease progress was reduced significantly and grain yields were improved appreciably. Earlysplits resulted in more leaf blast as compared to late splits. Zero N resulted in significantly less leaf and neck blast but yields were very low. Neck blast incidence was significantly higher at three and four equal N splits and yields were reduced by more than 50% compared with plots simultaneously protected with Beam (tricyclazole) at 0.06%. Effects of timing and splitting of N application on disease progress was not very clear on the moderately resistant variety Himalaya 2216. However, three and four equal splits resulted in increased severity of neck blast. Late split application of N is recommended to decrease blast and increase yield.
