Abstract

The competitive saprophytic ability of R. solani and R. bataticola [Macrophomina phaseolina] was investigated using the Cambridge method by employing two types of baits (wheat straw and sugarbeet hypocotyl pieces) in a sandy loam soil in laboratory tests. The competitive saprophytic colonization of these two baits by these two pathogens appreciably increased as the concentration of inoculum increased in the soil. The per cent colonization of baits was also influenced by the incubation period.
