Abstract

In vitro and in vivo tests were conducted to determine the effect of thermotherapy in the management of citrus ringspot disease caused by citrus ringspot virus. Ringspot infected bud-sticks of cultivar Kinnow were exposed to moist hot air at temperatures varying from 30-50oC for 30, 60 and 120 minutes. Exposure of the buds to 50oC for 30 minutes or more, or 45oC for 120 minutes were the most effective treatments for eliminating the virus from infected bud-sticks in vivo and in vitro. No virus particles were detected from in vitro shoots obtained from the buds exposed at 45 and 50oC for 120 minutes. In general, bud-viability, bud sprouting and shoot length decreased with increasing temperature.
