Abstract

The results are presented of surveys for sugarcane diseases conducted in Assam, India, during April-January in 1992-95. Red rot was recorded in all districts surveyed, appearing each season in July. Incidence was highest in January (75% at one site)and was lowest (2.5%) in cv. Co 740. Wilt caused by Cephalosporium sacchari occurred in association with red rot (Glomerella tucumanensis) but its incidence was <1%. Pokkah boeng caused by Fusarium moniliforme [Gibberella fujikuroi] and pineapple disease caused by Ceratocystis paradoxa were recorded for the first time in Assam. Seedling blight caused by Drechslera sacchari [Bipolaris sacchari] was recorded at one site, where it occurred at high incidence and caused high mortality in some cultivars. Grassy shoot disease, caused by a phytoplasma, was also recorded at one site. Smut (Ustilago scitaminea) was not recorded from cultivated sugarcane varieties.
