Abstract

A total of 60 genotypes of Phaseolus vulgaris were screened against 10 races (beta, gamma, Ind I, Ind II, Ind III, Ind IV, Ind V, Ind VI (alpha-Brazil), Ind VII and Ind VIII) of C. lindemuthianum under field and artificial epiphytotic conditions during 1992-94. Two accessions (AB 136 and G 2333) were highly resistant to all the races prevalent in Himachal Pradesh, India. The cultivars Cornell 49-242, EC 43036, EC 57080, KRC 5, PI 207-262 and Widusa exhibited resistance to >5 races whereas the remaining cultivars were susceptible to the majority of the races. The breakdown of Are and Mex genes governing resistance in most of the European and American cultivars to different virulences is also discussed.
