Abstract

F1 seedlings raised from true potato seed (TPS) of 9 cross combinations (SitaXEx/A-680-16, VB/A 85XCP 1971, VB/A 85XEx/A 680-16, Kufri JyotiXEx/A-680-16, KrushiXEx/A-680-16, JH 214XEx/A-723, Kufri SwarnaXSLB/T-45, Kufri SwarnaXVB/A182 and JH214XEx/A680-16) were screened against Phytophthora infestans in a late blight screening chamber and assigned to different resistance grades on a 1-4 scale. Another set of seedlings remained uninoculated. Produce from both the sets was screened in the field at the Central Potato Research Station, Kufri, India, in the following crop season in 1991. F1 seedlings showed a wide range of variability in their reaction to late blight. Resistance to late blight increased or decreased at the adult plant stage, depending on the cross combination, indicating that there is no universal relationship between seedling and adult plant resistance. A positive but low level of correlation (r=0.19) was observed between seedling and adult plant resistance. This showed that the seedling test with 4-5 week-old-seedlings cannot be relied on for identifying field resistant genotypes. Correlation between unexposed seedling and adult plant resistance was higher (r=0.31) which is indicative that screening at seedling stage eliminates some of the susceptible seedlings thereby reducing the work load in F1C1 generation.
