Abstract

Karnal bunt (Neovossia indica) is primarily a disease expressed on the grain, and symptoms are visible as sorus in both light and electron microscope. The pathogen is restricted to the pericarp where it proliferates and sporophores produce single solitary teliospore. Pathogen proliferation connects the pericarp with the vascular bundle and in this process the nucellar projections get ruptured and hampers the flow of nutrients to pericarp. The shrunkened endosperm and embryo and the space thus created gets filled with teliospores of the pathogen. The embryo is free from infection, even in severely infested grains.
