Successful Surgical Retrieval of Barded Hunting Spear from a Five Year Old Dog

A five year old rescued Non-descriptive dog was presented to the hospital with a history of iron rod perforation in its body from previous day. On clinical examination, vital parameters were deviated with increased heart and respiratory rate, congested mucous membrane and elevated body temperature. On physical examination, the rod was found to be perforated from left side (5cm lateral to midline of abdomen behind the 13th rib) to right side (2cm lateral to midline of abdomen). Wound was around 0.75 inches on left and 1.25 inches on right. On biochemical analysis, animal was found to be hypoglycemic with absolute neutrophilia. An emergency surgery was fixed to remove foreign body with midventral celiotomy. Under general anesthesia, the foreign body (Iron Barded Hunting Spear) was surgically removed. Post operatively animal was treated and maintained with antibiotics, supportive therapy and wound management. Suture was removed on 7th post-operative day. Animal recovered uneventfully.
