About the Journal

Focus and Scope

The Journal of the Indian Society of Soil Science publishes papers concerned with the advancement of agriculture throughout the world. It publishes original scientific work related to strategic and applied studies in all aspects of agricultural science and exploited species, as well as reviews of scientific topics of current agricultural relevance.
Specific topics of interest include (but are not confined to): soil genesis and classification; soil properties and processes in relation to soil physics, soil chemistry, soil biology, soil mineralogy; soil evaluation and land use planning, soil fertility and plant nutrition, crop production; soil engineering and technology, soil degradation, control, remediation and reclamation; soil and environment, environmental impacts of agriculture and forestry, impacts of climate change. The journal also publishes book reviews.

Peer Review Process

  • Paper received in the ISSS, is sent to an appropriate Editor.
  • Editor at this stage decide in terms of ‘YES’ or ‘NO’ for further processing of the paper. In case Editor’s decision is negative, he/ she records sound scientific reasons for the same. Such papers, not recommended for further processing is sent to the Chief Editor for decision. Decision of the Chief Editor is final.
  • A paper having Editor’s ‘YES’ is sent by the Secretary to a Reviewer, who is a specialist in that area of research, out of the panel prepared with input from the Editors and other distinguished members of the Society.
  • Comments received from the Reviewer is sent to the same Editor who had initially cleared that paper for review. At this stage Editor scrutinize the Reviewer’s comments, add his/ her own (if he/ she so desires) and send the consolidated comments to the Secretary who communicate with the corresponding author. From this stage onwards, the secretariat corresponds with author(s) and editor(s) only (no more communication with the Reviewer) until the decision is arrived at for the acceptance or otherwise of the paper.
  • Before the paper is finally accepted for publication, it is referred to the Chief Editor for his concurrence. Even the unaccepted paper is also referred to the Chief Editor for his information/ concurrence/ or otherwise. In all these cases decision of the Chief Editor is final.
Review articles on topical issues are invited from prominent scientists, peer-reviewed and published.

Journal History

The Indian Society of Soil Science (ISSS) come into existence on December 22, 1934 in Calcutta under Act XXI of 1860 (Registration No. 8164/252 of 1934-35) with 28 members. It was formally inaugurated on January 3, 1935 at the Presidency College, Calcutta. Sir Bryce C. Burt, the then Agricultural Commissioner in the Imperial (now Indian) Council of Agricultural Research, was the first President of the Society and Prof. J.N. Mukherjee its first secretary.
