Author Guidelines

GENERALJournal of Livestock Biodiversity covers all scientific areas of native livestock and poultry characterization, management and conservation encompassing genetics, breeding, biotechnology, value addition, evolution, conservation, sustainable use and management of animal genetic resources, impact of environmental and climatic changes on livestock biodiversity, cultural and historical significance of domestic animals in human societies as well as success stories. All contributions undergo editorial and peer review. Color illustrations are printed against the charge of the actual cost.

CATEGORIES OF MANUSCRIPTJournal of Livestock Biodiversity will consider: full-length research articles on original research accomplished (not more than 10-12 typed pages), short research notes (not more than 4-5 typed pages), hypotheses (1-2 pages), success stories (1-3 pages), viewpoint pieces (1-2 pages) and critical research reviews (up to 15 typed pages), book or software reviews (1-3 pages), obituaries (1-2 pages) and essays of a more general nature on ideas and trends in genetics, evolution and conservation (2-3 pages).

SUBMISSION. The manuscript should be typed in double space (12 pt, Times New Roman font preferred). All pages should be numbered consecutively. Use SI units, and give equivalent SI units in parenthesis when the use of other units is unavoidable. Symbols should conform to standard guidelines.

The copyright of the paper will be transferred from the author(s) to the publisher. It is mandatory to furnish the enclosed certificate along with the manuscript:

The decision of the editors will be final in the matter of acceptability for publication. The manuscripts should be submitted as email attachments, to journaloflivestockbiodiversity@gmail.com. The complete address, email, and telephone number of the corresponding author should be provided.

Title Page - The title should be short and informative and contain words useful for indexing.

Short Running Title – Not in more than 50 characters, in italics.

Keywords – Five or six keywords indicating the contents of the manuscript.

Authors – Names of the authors are to be typed in first letter capital.

Addresses of Authors – Addresses of the institution(s) where the work was carried out including telephone (office only), and e-mail address. The author for correspondence should be indicated with an asterisk (*).

Main Headings: Each manuscript should be divided into the following main headings (typed in bold, first letters capital, on the left-hand side of the page-Abstract, Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, Discussion, Acknowledgements, References. Please provide an Ethical Statement in Materials and Methods if required.

Abstract: The abstract should convey the essence of the contribution in not more than 250 words.

Introduction: A brief and precise literature review with essential background and objectives of the research undertaken.

Material and Methods: It should include the relevant details of the source and nature of the material, experimental design, and the techniques employed. New methods should be described in sufficient detail and others can be referred to published work.

Results: Results should contain data, essential for drawing the main conclusion from the study. Wherever needed, the data should be statistically analyzed. The data should not be repeated in both the table and figure.

Discussion: The discussion should deal with the interpretation of results. Preferably, results and discussion should be combined to avoid repetition.

CONVENTIONS. Authors should follow internationally accepted conventions regarding units, symbols, and abbreviations. Only SI units of measurement and standard abbreviations should be used. Binomial names of organisms are italicized.

TABLES. Tables should be typed in double space and numbered serially, in order of appearance. Details not mentioned in the text and explanations may be given below the table as footnotes. Do not use the "Insert Table" option of Microsoft Word, or Microsoft Excel, to create tables. Type in the tables as text, using tabs for delineating columns.

ILLUSTRATIONS. All figures should be numbered, serially in order of appearance. Figure legends should follow the figure. Line drawings should be sharp original drawings, not photographic reproductions. Photographs should be sharp, high-contrast, glossy prints. Color photographs can be accepted only when absolutely necessary. However, the actual cost of printing colored photographs will be borne by the author/s.

REFERENCES. Citations in the text should be by name and year, in chronological order and then alphabetically for the same year, and enclosed in parentheses. When there are two authors, the citation should include both names (e.g. Harbitz and Anderson, 1998). When there are three or more authors, the citation should have only the first author and 'et al.' (e.g. Woolard et al., 2003).

    When there are many more than six authors, it is preferable to cite only the first three and use 'et al.,’ Unpublished observations and personal communications should not be included in the list of references but should be cited within parentheses in the appropriate place in the text with the full names of the sources. Abstracts should not be used as references. Journal name, abbreviations and book titles are in italics. Please do not give space between initials in author names. A few examples are given below:

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS. These should follow immediately after the end of the main text. In references to granting agencies, the names should be written in full.

REPRINTS. A PDF file of the published article will also be supplied to all life members of the society to disseminate it for academic purposes.

Submission Preparation Checklist

  • The submission file is in Microsoft Word file format. The text is double-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  • Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the ‘Author Guidelines’ (available under ‘About the Journal’).
  • The address of the organization where the research was conducted is given in the by-line (changes of author’s address are given in the footnote).
  • Short communication from a complete M. Sc. thesis/ part of a Ph.D. thesis or article from experiment is being submitted. (In the case of a thesis, details are being provided in the comments to the editor column below).
