Abstract

WITH the progress in recent years of the use of mechanical equipment on land reclamation development for cultivation and colonization, considerable advances have been made both in the inven-tion of new methods and equipment for such tasks. Some of these methods which have proved to be most satisfactory for this type of work are outlined in the following paragraphs. The operations referred to mainly cover those as carried out in Central Africa by the British Government's Overseas Food Cor-poration where some two hundred and fifty thousand acres of forest land were cleared, and also in the Eastern Province of Ceylon where the Gal Oya Development Board are undertaking the clearance of a similar acreage comprising of tropical jungle and scrub land, on which they arc planning a multi-purpose project and will settle about two hundred and fifty thousand people, this area at present being comparatively uninhabited.
