Abstract

IN the technician's effort to build a better soil and grow enough food for the world's ever increasing population, his technical skill usually outruns what is humanly possible in terms of introducing improved practices. In analysing the prob-lem as a whole, therefore, we must go as far as we can in the sciences which together teach us the study of the soil, how it was formed and how it persists in face of the destructive agencies of wind and rain and tillage practices; we then have to retrace our steps a bit to find how much of this scientific knowledge can be used in face of the culti-vator's ingrained conservatism and of any particular government's notions of political expediency.
