Abstract

SOIL erosion is wide spread throughout the Bombay State, particularly in the ghat region and the rolling country of the Deccan and Karnatak and the eastern part of Gujerat. \Vhere the land surface is bared of protec-tive vegetation — as it must be under culti-vation — the soil is exposed directly to the abrasive action of the elements. Transpor-tation processes of an extremely rapid order are set in motion. Stripped of the protec-tive cover that normally anchors soil to the land-scape, this indispensable material soil — is frequently moved a thousand times faster than under normal conditions. This bewilderingly accelerated phenomenon of soil removal is known as " Soil Erosion ". Unless steps are taken to check its progress, it becomes the most potent single factor in the deterioration of the productive land. .
