Several methods like nitrifying power, nitrogen fixing power, microbial population and carbon dioxide evolution of the soil, have been put forward by several workers as an index of soil fertility but the fertility of a soil to crop responce cannot be predicted from figures obtained by andy of these methods unless we grow the crop itself
