Abstract

The goals to which we as a nation are working are opportunity and security, a better way of life for all our citizens and of their children which, on the final analysis, are built on the permanent pro- ductivity of the land. A thriving agriculture is the basis of our national prosperity. Productive land is a natural resource that we cannot get along without. That we have been wasteful in the use of this resource, there is not the least doubt. Almost every year the spectre of human misery and tragic waste visits us and we see natural resources destroyed by draught, flood and erosion. Many sciences and skills contribute to the improvement of agriculture. We have examples of nations '"'ho have harnessed the scientific and technological developments to a high degree in bringing about improvements in agricultural production. We certainly can profit by the experience of other coun- tries and contribute to further scientific dis- coveries.
