Abstract

The Northern hilly tract of India deserves very careful and immediate attention not only because it includes many of our important watersheds their peculiar problems but also because it constitutes a potential tract for the dairy cattle, sheep and other livestock development.

This industry will continue to depend, as at present, on the natural grasslands, the scope for growing of fodder crops being very limited Oiving to cultivation of food crops on all negotiable slopes. It is, therefore, imperative that consider- able emphasis is given to the dcvclop- ment of thesc grazing resources for fulfilling thc increasing forage de- mands of the dcvelopping livestock industry as also to the utilization of these resources consistent with the demands of the watershed protection.
